An example of a successful activist movement in todays world  is the Black Lives Matter movement. The movement had enormous impact on America and the country's conversation when it started in 2013, and that influence continues to today. Their message was communicated to the whole country, to make people aware and to convince those who were skeptical that systemic racism is still a problem, and to call to action the people of the country to recognise that black lives do indeed matter. They did this in a variety of ways — they organised protests, met policy makers and worked in communities. But a large part of their success can also be attributed to how they got their message out — that is, their media strategy.

As Bijan Stephen, writing for Wired, argues in his article “How Black Lives Matter Uses Social Media to Fight the Power”, BLM has leveraged new technology — for example, the proliferation of cellphones with cameras or the connectivity offered by social media networks — to communicate with millions of people. And on these platforms, these activists have created moments that brought the movement to the forefront of the country’s mind.

Black Lives Matter

The Black Lives Matter movement can teach us a lot about what kind of activism works in the wider world -- but for college campuses, we need to look closer.
